Diocese of Bath and Wells Events http://www.bathandwells.org.uk Diocese of Bath and Wells Events Calendar en-gb Copyright 2010 Diocese of Bath and Wells the spaces between - Exhibition in Bath Abbey September 10 to 29 2010, with specially composed music at the evening service on Sunday September 26. A exploration of what it means to be living in the spaces between earth and heaven. Living, that is, in the world of time and space, engaging fully in the present moment, while holding a spiritual vision of heaven, and an awareness that in every part of the material world the Spirit of God is with us. As a full time priest in the Church of England, artist Judith Roberts frequently speak the words, ‘The Lord is here'. In making these pictures she wanted to explore visually, freed of verbal constraints and dogmas, what it might mean in colour and shape to speak of the presence of the Spirit of God in various aspects of human experience. She hopes that the pictures will be accessible for anybody, of Christian faith or not, as we all live within the spaces between the known, the now, the not-yet and the unknown. The pictures are constructed from torn paper collage and acrylic paint applied in a number of ways. They are colourful, sizeable (max 6’ x4’) and expressive of the surprising movement and energy of the Spirit at work. They also express some of the struggle to hold a position of faith, and they refer to some of the key moments of the life of Jesus as he entered into what it means to be human. The Exhibition includes a service, with music composed for the occasion by Charles West, on Sunday September 26 at 6.30pm. Charles’s music is a striking interpretation of six of the pictures, full of its own rich energy and colour. It will be performed by the Beare Trio (piano, clarinet and cello), all professional Devon musicians. The exhibition will be open from 9 am to 6pm every day, although sometimes closed for services. To check opening times, please phone 01225 422462. Since 1955 globally life expectancy has risen by one third and child mortality has fallen by two-thirds. Economic improvement was triggered by the invention of exchange. The more people work for each other, the more prosperous they will become in future and there is good reason to expect that the twenty first century will see growing wealth, falling population, environmental improvements and less misery.

Lectures are followed by a question and answer session. Though we are called to preach the gospel 'afresh to each new generation', some things, arguably the most important things, remain unchanged. This evening Keith Brindle will compare how the old (the early church) and the new (today's church) witnessed to those around them. This will lead to a discussion about what should remain sacrosanct and what can be meddled with in the name of being elevant.

Keith is currently undergoing ordination training at Trinity College, Bristol, having previously been a secondary school Physics teacher, youth church leader, a process engineer, a long-term student, a supermarket trolley pusher, a research scientist, a fundraiser for WaterAid and other things beside. As a person who became a Christian in his late teens Keith is interested in working out how the church of today makes 'the case for Christ' to ordinary people.

The session is one of a series of six on Fresh Expressions, behind held on Monday evenings from 20 September to 25 October.

Cost: £4.50 per session or £20 for all six if booked before 13th September.

Cheques to be made payable to Cleeve and Claverham PCC and sent to Revd C Horder, 1 Millier Road, Cleeve, Bristol BS49 4NL http://www.bathandwells.org.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.calendar http://www.bathandwells.org.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.calendar webmaster@bathwells.anglican.org (Bath and Wells) Mon, 11 Oct 2010 12:00:00 AM BST World music comes to Taunton to benefit the Ukraine Musicians from around the world are appearing in Taunton to help promote the work of the Christian charity 'Hope Now' which provides education, child care and prison ministry in the Ukraine.

Local Churches are promoting the event in celebration of 25 years the charity which has enjoyed strong support by Taunton Christians since its inception by its founder British Baptist Minister, the Revd Vic Jackopson MBE, who will be compèring the evening.

Local church leader and former Mayor of Taunton Deane Adrian Prior-Sankey says, "We're delighted to welcome these gifted musicians in support of Hope Now. The performers are professional musicians – some being schoolmasters - so they tour various parts of Britain each half-term - the West Country every Michaelmas. We are delighted that this time they are coming to Martock – we are assured of a sparkling performance. In their last fourteen Rides they cycled 487 miles, visited 450 churches, sang 217 four-part motets and raised over £22,000, which demonstrates how good they are. Their style is “King’s Singers”, not barbershop. Their repertoire was originally sacred motets and anthems but now covers from Bach to popular music such as the Beatles & Billy Joel. Their renditions of “Postman Pat” and “Bob the Builder” are not to be missed. Each October for the past seven years they have sung Matins or Evensong many times at Bath Abbey and Exeter, Wells & Truro Cathedrals. Over the years they have been on local radio and in 2007 they were on BBC “Songs of Praise” with Aled Jones. Tickets are £6 at the door of the church, or £5 in advance from Martock News and Martock Gallery or by phoning Kathleen Lewis on 822706. http://www.bathandwells.org.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.calendar http://www.bathandwells.org.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=news.calendar webmaster@bathwells.anglican.org (Bath and Wells) Thu, 28 Oct 2010 12:00:00 AM BST Song Cycle concert at Martock Church SongCycle - the all singing all cycling male voice quartet - was formed in 1996 in Essex to raise money for charity by cycling from church to church.
