‘On New Roads – Franciscan Peace Pilgrimage’
2026 is the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi, and special events are taking place across the world focusing on peace building.
A national pilgrimage walk starts from Alnmouth Friary in Northumberland on 17 July arriving in East London on 2 October. The route passes through Somerset on its way to Hilfield Friary in Dorset. On Friday 4 September pilgrims will be at Compton Martin and arrive in Wells on Saturday 5 September to be greeted at Evensong at 5:15pm.
On Sunday 6 September the Cathedral Eucharist at 10:30am will have a special theme of Peace, with Bishop Christopher Chessun (Bishop of Southwark) preaching.
On Monday 7 September the pilgrims walk to Street, on 8 September to Queen Camel and on 9 September to Sherborne arriving at Hilfield Friary on 10 September.
The pilgrimage ends in Plaistow, East London on 2 October in time for the feast day of St Francis on 4 October..
