Art project brings community together in Yeovil

13th May 2022

They’ve been getting creative in Yeovil in a unique project which brought the local community together with an arts charity in the town.

Yeovil Pioneer, Farhad Chermahini the Pioneer Minister in Birchfield, Yeovil worked for almost a year with Yeovil Art Space to produce the creative day based around the theme of memory. Yeovil Art Space aims to bring arts to young people and the community through learning and sharing. They work with artists and creatives in the local area.

People were encouraged to use art in different forms to share their memories of living and growing up in the Birchfield area. There were art activities for all ages and abilities; print making, drawing and even artwork using an old typewriter. Each actvity was designed to help rekindle memories of the past and to create new memories for the future. More than 30 people came along, many who were lifelong residents.

Farhad has already done a couple of projects with Yeovil Art Space and is very enthusiastic about the work they do and the opportunity such a day can provide for the community, he said, ‘It is a fantastic partnership which benefits the local community really well. Yeovil Art Space are really adventurous and open to the ideas put forward by the Birchfield Community.

‘Birchfield is an area with lots of young families and children. There are 500 pupils at the local primary school. So, it was a wonderful opportunity to come together to share the art day at the local community centre. It is also an opportunity to help people reimagine and reconnect to the community after covid, so that together we can move forward from this difficult time.’
