Ascension Day ascent with a difference

Since 1883, students at the Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar have been ascending the church tower at St. Andrew's church on ascension day, to look out over the magnificent views and mark their moving on from the school to pastures new. Unfortunately for the second year in a row, they have been unable to due to Covid. Despite this however the tradition continued this year in virtual form.

Stuart Burns, Rector of St Andrews, joined forces with Sam Kail-Dyke from Kings of Wessex to produce a video service and virtual ascent of the tower courtesy of drone footage.

Revd Stuart says, "It is a great shame as it is wonderful tradition but although we would love to be sharing this celebration with our students in person, we hope that this video goes some of the way to at least replicating the experience as best as we can. It features spectacular footage of the church, the tower, Cheddar, the Mendips and the Levels so it really is a must watch!"
