St Mary's, East Brent to receive £50,000 grant aid

25th May 2021

The community of St Mary’s in East Brent are celebrating following confirmation they’re to receive a grant of £50,000 from Viridor Credits through the Landfill Communities Fund, which means they can begin much needed roof repairs on the Grade 1 listed building.

St Mary’s in East Brent is a medieval church built in the 15th century. It houses several unusual features, among them is an extremely rare, ribbed plaster ceiling to the nave which dates from 1637. It is an exceptional example of early Gothic revival and features a blackberry thorn motif, which is so rare visitors from across the world often travel to East Brent to see it.

But the poor condition of the roof means water pours in and without urgent restoration work it is in danger of collapse. Now, thanks to the grant, phase one of the crucial roof repairs can begin this summer.

Emma Brown, Church Buildings Adviser, Diocese Bath and Wells said: “The Diocese is delighted to hear this good news and that the church will be saved and expertly conserved. Thanks to the parish and local volunteers for their dedication and hard work in caring for this magnificent building.”.

The whole project will cost more than £155,000. So far, the church has received support from the Nuttall Trust, Somerset Churches Trust and local private donations. There are also plans to set up a Supporters’ Group, who will have a keen interest in historic building conservation and will provide help with fundraising. It is hoped that this, combined with help from the local community, will allow the other stages of the repair to begin later in the year.

Revd Kevin Wright, Rector says the parish has developed a vision for the church building and is committed to serving at the heart of their community. “I believe St Mary’s Church is an important symbol of the faith that has been in East Brent for almost a thousand years and is an asset to the community. I do not want to see it closed, and I appeal for help in securing its future and developing it as a community resource.”

There is a ‘get to know your church’ community open day planned for Saturday 31 July to celebrate St Mary’s and its community; everybody is welcome.
