Over 70 clergy attended the first of this year’s Church Money Matters gatherings at Flourish House, Wells on 26 February.
The session was designed to give clergy the opportunity to reflect on the fundraising challenge within our churches, draw on experience from across Bath and Wells, and together explore some of the ways in which their future sustainability can be secured.
Commenting on the day, the Revd Jonathan Philpott, Local Giving and Funding Adviser says, “It was wonderful to welcome so many clergy at a day to discuss giving and generosity. It was the first time we have had such a session, but we recognise that this is a tough topic for many clergy and that we are all facing financial challenges. It felt important to offer clergy time and space to share together, and to highlight the resources and support that are available to them.
“There was great engagement and discussion throughout the day, and I think most people went away feeling encouraged and supported - as well as a bit surprised by the level of support that we as a Giving and Funding team can offer. What felt really positive was that people really seemed to take away the message that we really can harness what we have, rather than worry about what we don’t have.”
The first Church Money Matters was only for licensed clergy, and covered topics including the role of clergy in relation to church finances. In May the first of three archdeaconry sessions for anyone concerned with church money matters, including treasurers and fundraisers, will take place. A further two sessions will be held in the autumn.
