Empowering the next generation

In partnership with Movement, the Diocese of Bath and Wells has set up a learning community for young people and young adults to support them to grow in their Christian leadership. The Young Leaders Learning Hub is designed to be a supportive environment that equips young leaders, aged 15-25, with the essential skills needed to practisce and develop their leadership abilities as they strive to become the people God has called them to be.

Created to develop and address some of the unique challenges faced by young Christian leaders, the Hub provides a space to improve leadership skills and learn how to apply them in real-life contexts. There are opportunities to learn from experienced leaders, take part in in worship, and prayer, as well as develop new skills and learn from one another.

The Hub also offers opportunities to explore leadership styles, teamwork dynamics, communication techniques, and more.
"Elizabeth Alden, Equipping Lead for Movement, has led leadership programmes previously. She says, “Previous groups have come from all walks of life, all kinds of jobs, but they all said they gained and benefited from this type of personal investment. I would like young people and young adults to also be encouraged in this way and to be strengthened in their leadership and we think they'll have fun doing it together.”

Elizabeth believes that young people today have a lot of valuable insight and potential to contribute. She says they are a respectful generation, known for their willingness to listen and reflect before speaking. This respectful nature, however, sometimes means their voices are not always heard. The Hub seeks to help them amplify their voice, by learning techniques to express their ideas and perspectives. This is, however, a generation where isolation can be a big issue. The learning will be, and will foster, strong community within which life’s and leadership’s challenges and celebrations will be shared.

One aspect of the Hub will be collaborative learning. Learning by listening attentively, reflecting and evolving their opinions based on shared insights. Something Elizabeth feels young people and young adults do naturally,

“This generation of young leaders has the potential to teach us as much as we teach them. Their ability to listen and learn collaboratively is crucial in today’s world. We hope the Young Leaders Learning Hub will help them develop these skills so they can become more effective and impactful leaders.”
