The Church of England’s Energy Footprint Tool is open for churches to enter energy use from 2024. Last year in Bath and Wells we had a fantastic response to the EFT with 60% of churches participating. This year we are hoping that we can get closer to 100%. The data collected from the tool will help your church understand its carbon footprint and can open up opportunities for churches to access financial support for sustainability measures.
The EFT is an essential part of caring for God’s Creation, by helping to combat global heating and climate change. It is a carbon footprint calculator that evaluates churches’ energy usage. By analysing energy consumption, sources, and associated costs, the tool provides an accurate assessment of each church’s carbon emissions and highlights where improvements can be made. It also helps identify opportunities to enhance energy efficiency and lower costs. Dan Willis, Bath and Wells Net Zero Enabler, says, "The EFT is more than just a tool; it’s a gateway to understanding, improving, and acting on our churches’ carbon footprints. As part of the Parish Returns system, it calculates your church’s carbon footprint by analysing energy consumption and sources. This baseline is crucial for identifying opportunities to cut costs, reduce emissions, and take meaningful steps toward sustainability."
Through the EFT many churches have been awarded grants, fully funded energy audits, and expert advice. In addition, each church which completes the EFT will receive a certificate signed by Bishop Michael, detailing their carbon footprint and its impact. This can be displayed in the church to highlight the environmental stewardship work undertaken locally.
Filling in the EFT is simple and easy. You can find it on the Parish Returns Website. All that’s needed are the energy bills for 2024, information on energy sources, and basic usage data. The online form takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Paper versions of the tool are also available. If you are unsure how to do it, Dan has produced an easy step by step guide which takes you through the process. Or you can email him for more help dan.wills@bathwells.anglican.org
The EFT is a critical step on our journey to Net Zero and is part of our collective effort to take better care of God’s earth. The EFT wis open until the end of June.
