How churches have been helping their communities this summer

31st August 2023

Throughout the school summer holidays, churches across Bath and Wells have been providing chances for community support through a blend of food, faith, and enjoyment. They creatively came up with various activities to ensure each interaction was engaging and meaningful for those attending. Some churches provided food with the assistance of local supermarkets. Each was a great way for  churches to connect with their wider community.

St Paul’s Weston ran a Treasure Island-theme weekend of fun and faith and offered two course meals for families, twice a week at their Little Kings gatherings, with the help of Waitrose supermarket.

"What an amazing week we had! From Monday to Friday our church was filled with the laughter, joy and excitement of over 40 amazing kids who joined us on an unforgettable adventure!"

Craig Philbrick, Vicar at St Paul's Weston

St. Mary's Bridgwater has been making a difference this summer by hosting a "Grubs Up" family drop-in event every Tuesday. They have been providing essential meals to families in need and have made even more of an impact through a valuable partnership with the generous support of Morrisons, a well-respected supermarket chain.

"A fantastic way to connect with other local families and have a night off from cooking!"

Revd Suse Osmond, Vicar at St Mary’s Bridgwater

St Peter’s, Portishead ran a weekly event called ‘Summer Refresh’ where families were able to join for coffee, cake and activities during the summer holidays.

"We had such a great time connecting with loads of parents, carers, babies, children and young people at Summer Refresh. I counted around 100 people in total who came along!"

Mark Fuller, Team Vicar at Portishead Team Ministry

Revd Linday Smith, Assistant Curate at St Peter's, Portishead ran two groups: Martha’s Kitchen, which supports families during the school holidays by providing them with a weekly hot meal, and muddy play days and a place for families to come together outside and engage with creation. Both projects are ecumenical.

"Muddy Church" at Wookey Goat Farm was a family event where families could enjoy a farm trail, discover Jesus, sing, and have some light refreshments.

"Muddy Church is a place for wandering and wondering about God. Being together no matter what the weather, exploring and journeying."
