School chaplains offer prayer and spiritual guidance to pupils and staff; they support the school as a place where staff and students feel cared for and safe. The Church of England describes them as ‘a bridge between the school and church, and between the school and the wider community, including other denominations and faith communities.’
A school chaplain often plays a vital role in creating a safe space for students, teachers, and the community to openly share their feelings and thoughts. Like all chaplains, those who work in schools, are there to serve all faiths and none.
Wendy Hester is Chaplain to Sexeys, King Arthur’s and Ansford schools. She has given us an insight into what it is like being a school chaplain.
Being a school chaplain has allowed me to live and share the story of God with students and staff. My presence is all about being visible, accessible, and ready to share the story of God when asked. Through wearing a small gold cross on my lanyard, I've had the privilege of experiencing many God moments, where I've been in the right place at the right time for students and staff members. It's been a joy to share something so precious to me with others and to care for those I interact with, inspired by God's love.
In my role, I make myself known in staff rooms, engage with newcomers, and run various clubs and activities. I've formed connections with local churches and priests, even during challenging times like the pandemic. Despite obstacles, I've found ways to connect virtually and collaborate with local church leaders which has provided me with a great source of strength and support.
Prayer and worship are also an integral part of my role. From participating in prayer networks during lockdown to creating a quiet prayer corner to be used by staff and students, I've been involved in nurturing moments of faith and reflection. I've also organised staff prayers and connected with visiting priests for collective worship, demonstrating the role of faith within the school community.
My involvement also extends beyond spiritual matters. I've been part of school celebrations, supported individuals during crises, and mentored those in need. Through it all, I've strived to be on the edge as an observer and mediator, while also being at the centre of meaningful moments.
I am so thankful to God for the unique role chaplains have and what I personally have as a chaplain. It has been a great privilege to be the link between school and the church outside. The journey of building trust, forming connections, and making a positive impact on the lives of students and staff has been truly fulfilling and I'm grateful for the unique role I've had the privilege to fill.
