Weston Repair Cafe celebrates a year supporting the community

28th November 2023

This month the Weston Repair Café which is held at Christ Church, Weston super Mare, celebrated its first full year of operation since restarting after lockdown.  As a thank you to the church for hosting the café, a gift of £350 was donated to the fund set up buy and install power-assisted doors at Christ Church to make pushchair and disabled access easier.

A spokesperson for Christ Church said, “Throwing stuff away because it’s uneconomic to repair is bad for our planet and our pockets. Repair Cafés are places to bring small electricals, clothing, toys, jewellery, bicycles, etc, for repair. We have skilled volunteers willing to advise and assist with repairs.”

Speaking about the anniversary, a representative of the Repair Cafe said, “A huge thank you goes to the Church for hosting us, to all our community volunteers and to our guests who have brought along over 200 items for advice or repair, keeping many from ending up in landfill.  Together with the café team, offering wonderful cake and cuppas and a very warm welcome, we have all had great fun and made new friends along the way.”

The donations received each month have enabled the group to present the Weston Foodbank with a cheque for £600.  The Foodbank Manager, Frederique, joined the celebration, she said, “I am delighted to receive such a large donation from another community-led project.

This will help us to continue supporting people in our town with essentials as winter approaches.”
Anyone in the area is welcome to pop along to the repair session, you don’t need to bring an item for repair the group say anyone can drop in for a chat and a cuppa.  More information is available on the North Somerset Repair Café Facebook page, the Christ Church website or email westonrepaircafe@gmail.com for details.
