A service of welcome for Year 5 pupils

21st October 2024

Pupils, parents, carers and family members filled St John’s Church, Frome to take part in the Selwood Academy Year 5 Welcome Service. Children from each class played a central part in the service, taking part in a performance, poetry reading, singing, and prayer.

Paul Marvin, Bath and Wells Education Adviser joined the service and shared his reflection.

"I was privileged to be invited to the Selwood Academy’s Year 5 Welcome Service. Even though it was in the middle of the day, St John’s Church in Frome was packed, lots of parents, carers and other family members attended.

After a welcome from Mrs Hooper, the head of Key Stage 2, and Janet Cauldwell as a representative of the church, we all joined together to sing. This is where the acoustics of the church really came into being.

During the service, the children from each Year 5 class did a short performance. There was some performance poetry based around the schools four core values, a mini drama about the life of Methodist pioneer John Wesley and a presentation of what it is like to visit Selwood Academy itself.

The headteacher Mr Jeffries held a reflection and there was even a welcome from the school’s head boy and head girls. I also got the opportunity to present certificates from the diocese to all the new Year 5 starters.

The children did the school proud and they presented and sang out extremely well."
