Celebrating Climate Sunday

8th September 2021

To "strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth", was the focus of the Climate Sunday Outdoor Service held in the South Quantock Benefice.

Revd Tracey Hallett said, “The service was wonderful in helping us balance traditional and new ways of worshipping that encouraged all of us present to: Give thanks to God, to repent that we all play a part in the climate crisis and to commit ourselves to protecting, healing and restoring creation by choosing to act now as we think about what our vision for a renewed earth is.”

A large gazebo was set up as the central gathering for the service and people brought their own chairs to sit on. Three pop up gazebo ‘Actions Stations’ were set up around the edge of the churchyard. These contained activities such as; a bug hotel, bird feeders, wildflower seed bombs and there was also a place to create a prayer banner using recycled materials. The banner was placed in Cheddon Church after the service.

Everyone at the service had the opportunity to write a prayer on a paper chain. These were added to a stone cross in the churchyard and used as part of the offertory prayer. There was also a quiet meditation walk with seven reflective stops, for people who prefer quiet reflection. Instructions about the walk were added to the back of the order of service.

One of those who attended the service reflected, “It was a wonderful outdoor service for all ages; moving and joyous. So much thought and care had been put into the activities. The Nature walk with its 7 stops for contemplation and reflection on how we can be better custodians of the planet was just wonderful. Thank you.”

Revd Tracey said: “The whole service was great fun, and we were delighted that the sun shone on us. We were so glad to see members of our community who would not normally come to church all engaging and enjoying this very special experimental service.  What a brilliant way to ensure we are all much more aware of the climate crisis and how we can all play a small part in making a big difference.”
