Charles Curnock from Bath has been honoured by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby in this year’s Lambeth Awards which are given for outstanding contribution to the Church and wider society.

Charles has been awarded The Canterbury Cross for Services to the Church of England for sustained, voluntary contributions to church leadership and governance, the care of the elderly, and political action, as well as direction of two major church renovation projects.

Charles, who is member of St Michael’s Without in the centre of Bath, was involved in the re-organisation of the church in 2008, and up until 2019, was the Director of the Footprint Project at Bath Abbey. He also helped with a project to build a Christian care home, when he first moved to Bath 30 years ago. He then became a trustee of the home for more than 15 years.

Charles, says he was ‘gobsmacked’ when he heard the news. The first he knew about the award was when he was told he was to receive it. “It is a real honour to have been given the award, but all the work I’ve done has involved teams of people, I’d like to thank them too.”

Bishop Peter thanked Charles for all his work over the years, ““I’m delighted that Charles has been awarded the Canterbury Cross for his contributions to the Church of England by the Archbishop of Canterbury. It’s a great honour which is well deserved after his many years of service and support for Bath Abbey, and St Michael’s Without. The work he has led and supported has been a huge blessing to many people across Bath and beyond and I pray that the fruits of all that has been achieved will be a blessing to many more people in the years to come.”

The Reverend Canon Guy Bridgewater, Rector of Bath Abbey, said: “Our warmest congratulations and gratitude to Charles, who has been an invaluable support and great friend to the Abbey for many years. During his time here Charles fulfilled a range of important roles, all with the same positivity and infectious enthusiasm. His work on Footprint in particular has been an amazing testament to his tireless dedication and bright vision.”
