Around 300 people enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Carol Service, ‘Singing in the Ring’ at Cutcombe Market on Exmoor bringing members of the farming community the local churches and many more to the cattle market to celebrate together with those in the community. Joining them were the Exmoor Hill Farming Network (EHFN), the Farming Community Network (FCN) and Revd David Weir, Rector at Exmoor (Benefice).
Preaching at the service Bishop Michael spoke of the shepherds who were the first to learn of the birth of Christ. “…because they listened to the angels’ message, they are afforded the honour of being the fist to visit the Newborn King.”
He asked those gathered, “What message will you share about the ways in which your experience of Christ in this place and elsewhere has touched your heart and your mind? Because all of us are invited to be change, just like the shepherds were in tonight’s reading.”
Readings at the Carol Service were given by local farmers and representatives of Exmoor Farmers Livestock Auctions and the Exmoor Rural Health Hub. Afterwards everyone was treated to a complimentary beef stew.
Revd David said the service illustrated the support the community offers one another, he said, “It’s a great gathering. The cattle market is a very significant place for people. Week in week out people gather here to buy and sell cattle and sheep. So, this is a lovely opportunity to gather here in a different way and celebrate all the life that gathers round the market.
“It is about mutual support for the agricultural community, which is a very special community. There is a lot of support for that community from the Hill Farm Network, Farming Crisis Network, the chaplains, the Church, the Health Hub. Today is a celebration of all of that.”
They are thoughts echoed by Market Chaplain, Andy Jerrard, who said, “If the church can’t be in the community there isn’t any point. Having the service here, in people’s workplace, where they feel comfortable is important.”
Some of those who attended shared their joy at being part of the evening, one said, “I thought it was absolutely brilliant. I loved it.” Another remarked, “It was fabulous. It was very good.”
Afterwards, Bishop Michael spoke of his joy at being part of this special community celebration, "It's been wonderful to be together and to celebrate the life of the community. I am so proud and privileged to have been here."
