Over the weekend (26 and 27 September) in four intimate services in the Lady Chapel of Wells Cathedral, 17 new deacons were ordained.
Due to Coronavirus restrictions, numbers witnessing the service in person were limited but all the services filmed and made available on the Bath and Wells Facebook page immediately after the services for friends, family and supporters who couldn’t attend.
Although very different, the ordinations were no less special with Bishop Ruth commenting, “It is really strange doing this in such a small group of people but it is no less awesome and magnificent.”
The new deacons were equally positive about the smaller services. Revd Emma Kendall says “It was really different to what we expected earlier in the year, obviously, but it was really lovely. Intimate, beautiful, with the candlelight and everything. It was wonderful.” People also appreciated the filming of the services, with one viewer saying, “It felt such a privilege to be so up close and personal.”
You can watch all of the services, as well as some films of the reactions to them, on the Diocesan Events and Celebrations Playlist on the Bath and Wells YouTube channel.
More pictures are available to view on our Facebook page. You don’t need a Facebook account to view them.
Our new priests will be priested in services at St Andrew’s in Burnham on Monday, St Cuthbert’s in Wells on Tuesday and St Swithin’s in Bath on Wednesday. Again this service will be recorded and uploaded to the diocesan Facebook page on Monday. The services on Tuesday and Wednesday will be livestreamed via the same Facebook page. And on 3 October ten new Readers will also be licenced at two socially distance services at the Bishop’s Palace.
