While it may seem like there is so very little you can do as an individual to reduce global carbon emissions that isn’t true. Much of the world’s carbon emissions are linked to consumption and the UK has a huge impact on global production chains and subsequent carbon emissions. As individuals, we can take steps to reduce our own carbon footprints, and in turn, this will influence our wider circles, reducing their footprints too – causing a multiplier effect.
An easy way to start your individual action is to measure your own carbon footprint. This will give you a benchmark of where you are at in comparison to other people across the UK and the world.

h. Here are ten Pledges for Creation that could help you reduce your personal carbon footprint.
10 Pledges for Creation
As Christians it is our duty to be good stewards of the Earth. Using this list could help you reduce your carbon footprint. You could also use it in your house group or as a church community as a starting point to discuss the options and commitments you can to become more carbon-neutral:
- I pledge to have at least one ‘meat free’ day per week.
- I pledge to switch to green energy.
- I pledge to switch off lights and appliances when not in use.
- I pledge to offset my carbon emissions.
- I pledge to reduce my car travel.
- I pledge to recycle more.
- I pledge to encourage my friends and family to reduce their carbon footprint too.
- I pledge to seek out and use local producers and suppliers to reduce my food miles.
- I pledge to write to my MP to encourage them to support climate change mitigation.
- I pledge to eat more seasonal foods.
