Vicar's Close Project - Wells Cathedral

Vicars’ Close is the oldest intact medieval street in Europe (1348) still used for its original purpose: to house the Cathedral’s adult choir. An internationally significant architectural site, it has been integral to the history and fine choral tradition of Wells Cathedral for centuries; its continuity of use is incredibly rare. It is an exceptional place which has retained its medieval character to a remarkable degree. As a group of buildings, it is possibly without parallel.

Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and others, we are embarking on an exciting and ambitious project which will repair and restore these buildings, creating a legacy that will safeguard their future, and enabling an exciting, new, visitor experience and programme of events to uncover and celebrate this extraordinary heritage, opening it up to the public for the first time.
