Great Wood Placement with SWYM

Are you looking for Youth Work and Theology training with an exciting mix of opportunities? How about getting trained to work in schools as a chaplain, or gaining qualifications in outdoor education, getting stuck into filming and editing fun videos, delivering engaging and powerful assemblies, learning about mentoring young people, giving gospel presentations, being part of a lively and active church, having the chance to set up new initiatives and take the lead, and much more besides.

If this appeals to you then you might consider training with Great Wood and SWYM (swym.org.uk), where you can go from a foundation level to a full degree. It’s a great opportunity for someone who loves God, young people, and a variety of working environments and styles.

Great Wood Camp is an outdoor activities centre in Somerset, founded by Christians and still maintaining that legacy today. In the holidays we have Scripture Union camps, in term time we host the local authority who bring schools to site. Our chaplain, Patrick, works with the schools that come, leading activities and spending time with students and staff, and telling a faith based story at the last night’s camp fire. You would come and work along side him, learning to lead groups in activities like archery and low ropes, gaining qualifications such as 1st Aid and Lifeguarding, and how to present stories and tell tales that engage young and old alike.

Further to this, you would be working in schools, sometimes alongside Patrick, but also, in time, on your own as a chaplain in your own right. Chaplaincy in schools is a wide and varied role that can be developed around your strengths and interests, but that serves the school community and will give you opportunities to be stretched and challenged.
